Lesson 01 - HTML 1

How to write, and view, a basic HTML document, step by step.

This lesson will work with any text editor. You do not need to use tankPad for this lesson.

If you wish to use tankPad, you can open it here... tankPad

Step 1: Open your text editor.

Step 2: Type the following into your text editor...

Step 3: Save the document as

lesson1.html

Step 4: Go to your downloads folder, or wherever your files download to, and look for the file you just created.
(Depending on what method you used to build your HTML file, you may notice the name of the file has changed to have a .txt at the end. If that is the case, rename the file back to "lesson1.html".)

Step 5: Open the file. Your OS should automatically choose a compatible reader or file, and you should simply see the words "Hello world." at the top left of your ooened browser. What you see, is your browser following the commands of the HTML file you created. You may close the browser, or tab, showing your HTML document.

Great job!

Extra credit: Go back through the steps, but his time, try altering the text "Hello world." To whatever message you want, then go through the file opening process to view the change you made.

You may be thinking, "That's it?" and in a way, yes, that's it.

A basic website is simply one or more files written in a specialized, easy to learn, code that gets translated by your web browser into a website. Each lesson in this series will build one step on top of the lesson before it, until you are hosting your own website for the whole world to see.
