The Fediverse
Decentralized Social Media
How do I start?
You can start in two ways...
1. Choose to learn about Fediverse technology...
This will lead to a better understanding of why the Fediverse is better, and also why it can be challenging to use at first.
Or...
2. Just get started...
If you just want to start interacting with people, we have basic, step by step instructions to do just that!

About the Fediverse
Instead of having one main corporation that controls your social media experience, the Fediverse is a set of universal standards for ANYONE to connect to ANYONE else.
Some servers are owned by large corporations, like Facebook's Threads (also part of the Fediverse), some are open source organizations with hundreds of thousands of users like Mastodon.Social, some are personal computers with only one account on it... and everything in between! The one thing that makes Fedi special, is that all of these corporations, organizations, everyday people, etc... can all connect with each other over the same decentralized network.
There are over 40,000 different "servers" that use the Fediverse...

Each of these servers, organizations, etc... use the same connection technology called ActivetyPub.
ActivityPub is kind of like email 2.0. Just like Google has an email server that can "talk" to Microsoft, so too can
mastodon.social/ "talk" to
lemmy.world/ or to
pixelfed.social
etc...
Each of these 40,000 different companies, organizations, etc... all have the ability to share with one another using the ActivityPub technology standard.
Now that you understand that much, you can either go through the various servers and decide what one works best for you, or you can just use the ...
Fediverse Quick Start
1. If you decide to just jump in and learn about different servers later, a totally acceptable option, start by getting an account here...
https://mastodon.social/explore
Mastodon.social is a popular Fediverse server, and, critically, allows account migration. [?] This way when you learn more about different Fediverse servers, you can move your account to another server if you want. Many, but not all, servers have this feature.
2. Once you get an account, follow the most awesome person you know... me. Lol

3. Go through my posts and find a post that you like a lot, bonus if it has a lot of people who have shared it.
4. View the accounts of the people who liked or shared the post you like, and see what they are posting and sharing. If you like what they are posting or sharing, read their bio and follow them. Interact with their posts. If they are someone you want to connect with, do it!
5. Go back to my post you liked and check out the next user who liked or shared it. Do the same thing over and over until you feel like you have enough connections, then move onto another post, or person. If you think someone posts cool things, talk to them and follow them. Talk to the people who like and follow what they like and follow.
Wait, wait! (you may be thinking) This is an echo chamber!
Well... yes! Lol
This is how to start finding people you will like. An "echo chamber" isn't a problem, it's the point. This is what social media algorithms do for you automatically and it's why it's so easy for people to use them right after installing.
However, the fediverse is different because you choose your own "algorithm". It's not dictated to you by the corporation running Facebook, or Twitter, or whatever. It's yours and you can change direction anytime.
Once you find enough people who you like, they are bound to follow you back if you are also sharing, talking, and posting interesting things.
There is also a "feed" that acts a lot like other social media by giving you the most popular things on your server, but if you start there, you are likely to only find people who already have a fan base. This isn't bad, as you can interact with people who like them the same way I described interacting with my account, but it's difficult to find your preferred community unless you go through a LOT of popular accounts.
The best thing about the Fediverse is that once you stop tailoring your follows/mutuals, you aren't "trapped" in a loop, like other social media. You can go search for people you don't like (if you are into that kind of thing lol).
Or, use the explore feature to find conversations you are interested in like painting, digital art, photography, gardening, politics, music, etc...
