BLET Local 269 Strike

Greetings comrades.

BLET Local 269 is set to go on strike in just a few days. In doing so, they will be shutting down the passenger and freight operations of the Long Island Railroad, the largest commuter railroad in the US. [1]

Their demands aren't unreasonable, even winning recommendations from two separate Federal Emergency mediators. [1][3] Yet, to no one's surprise, corporate media has taken an anti-labor stance, the Post even calling the Union "thugs". [2]

The Union is asking for the smallest raise out of any railroad in the country, [1] but the rail negotiators think they can get away with smearing the Union because most PR so far has been corporate controlled.

Let's change that.

If you live in the NY NJ area, talk to your friends and let them know about this possible strike and the transportation issues it will cause.

Call your representatives and message your friends.

If you don't live in the area, but know someone that does, please send a message to let them know what's going on.

This strike has been looming for years because of two "legal" loopholes.

First, courts enforce "pattern bargaining". This means if a union is asking for something far outside what another similar union has already accepted, the union can be forced to accept the established "bargain".

Second, the MTA negotiates first with a union that is legally not permitted to strike under NY's Taylor Law, then demands "pattern bargaining" for other unions.

Obviously, forcing a workers organization to accept wages and conditions they do not want, on threat of fines or jail, is wildly immoral, but this is also just another reminder that this is a nation of slavers, not of the people.
